Villarrica Volcano Ascent
Get ready for an epic adventure in one of Chile’s most iconic destinations. The ascent of Villarrica Volcano is an experience you will only find in Pucón. This tour lets you feel the excitement and grandeur of climbing to the crater of the most active volcano in South America, on a 4 to 5 hour walk through striking landscapes with incomparable views.
The route starts at the ski centre in the Juncalillo sector, at 1,200 m above sea level, and climbs to 2,847 metres over stretches of volcanic ground, snow and ice depending on the season. You can come back down on foot or by controlled sliding on the snow, which adds a bit of fun to the return.

- Minimum age: 14 years (with parental consent)
- Recommended age: 18 years and over
- Not suitable for pregnant women or people with heart conditions
- Permitted weight: between 30 and 100 kg
- A good general level of fitness
- Stages of the ascent:
- First stage (1,800 m to 2,100 m) – approx. 2 km: Loose stone or snow, moderate gradient. Crampons are used if there is ice.
- Middle stage (2,100 m to 2,500 m) – approx. 2.5 km: Steeper ground, compacted snow or ice. An ice axe is compulsory. Technical rest stops.
- Final stage (2,500 m to 2,847 m) – approx. 1.5 km: Gradient of up to 45°, strong wind. Gas masks are worn before reaching the crater.
- Descent: On foot or sliding down the snow (known locally as “culipatín”). Estimated time: 2 to 3 hours.
